Individual Nutrition Counseling

Initial appointments include a nutrition and wellness assessment, personalized nutrition care plan, and a new patient packet which includes grocery guide and food portion size list. Other materials and hand-outs will be provided based on your individual needs and challenges and upon follow-up. Initial appointments with metabolic testing are typically 90 minutes; initial appointments without metabolic testing are typically 60 minutes; follow-up appointments are typically 60 minutes.

Metabolic Testing

By testing your resting metabolic rate (RMR), with indirect calorimetry, you will learn how many calories you can consume without gaining weight, the deficit needed for weight loss, or the increased amount of calories needed for weight gain. Typically, an RMR is determined using a formula, based on your weight, height and age; however, this method does not take into account individual nuances. Measuring your actual metabolism in our office will give us an exact measurement of your RMR.

About the test:

We use the FDA approved REEVUE indirect calorimeter and the MedGem indirect calorimeter to measure your resting metabolic rate (RMR). During the test you will be asked to recline in a comfortable chair, place a cushioned clamp over your nose, and breathe calmly for ten minutes into a mouthpiece that is attached to one of the indirect calorimeters. The key is to relax and be as still as possible while breathing normally.

Preparation for the test:

  • Do not exercise prior to your appointment on the day of the test.
  • Do not eat or drink anything (except water) within four hours of your appointment time. An overnight fast (after midnight) is best if your test can be scheduled in the early morning.
  • Take in no caffeine the day of the test.

Group Nutrition Counseling

Group counseling sessions are designed to discuss an individual topic, such as weight management, thyroid and diet, or sports nutrition, with a group of 4 or more. Sample menu patterns can be created and paired with handouts providing tips and useful information to help each member of the group session achieve his/her personal goals. Group counseling is covered under some insurance plans.

The Savvy Shopper Grocery Store Tour

With so many items to choose from these days, shopping for healthy choices can become overwhelming. Reading food labels and ingredient lists can quickly become confusing and frustrating. One of our Registered Dietitians can personally guide you through the grocery store, educating you on food labels and ingredient lists while reviewing and analyzing products you use and some products you may want to consider incorporating into your new healthy lifestyle! At the end of the tour, you will have a personalized, nutritious shopping list and a better understanding of food labels.
